Joan, my painting professor, has been in the news for her on-site portrait painting at geylang. She's painted a motley crew of all the types you would expect at geylang. One of the coffeeshop aunties interviewed in the papers was reported to have said, "I don't understand why she's painting all these ugly people. Give me the painting I also don't want."
And so my painting professor, with much indignance, had to paint more "ugly people" to show singaporeans something. She hired one of the indian security guards who works at our school to pose for her, and made him "glorious", in her words. Think of pectorals, calvin klein underwear advertisement pose and all.
Her geylang collection (and the glorious ck ad) is on exhibition from thursday night to somethingth june, at the basheer gallery at bras basah. I was at the gallery yesterday looking at all the work being put around the white room, and helping her get out posters and some kind of banner. I realise that these fine art people don't have text and environmental signage in their minds at all.
These holidays are making me very happy. For many reasons, one of which is the sun back in singapore, stretched over a luxurious deep blue sky and wrapping round limbs.
And there are Projects. Today, in a burst of energy, i started modifying my wardrobe. All my clothes are spoiled in some way, and so I have a lot of work to do or risk running out of outfit options. Tomorrow is tiramisu day at dawn's house. I don't like tiramisu, but I like the ones we make.
