While reading up on outsider artists, a term for insane or spiritual artists:

"Though initially her automatic images were rambling and chaotic, over time they came to include figurative elements and often took the form of obsessive elaborations on words and the names of individuals. The tendency to elaborate obsessively on simple forms or to repeat mechanical actions in increasingly elaborate and often chaotic ways is a characteristic of much outsider production."

"His images are constructed of microscopically detailed elements, sometimes consisting of literally hundreds of interconnecting figures and faces, which he draws without the aid of magnifying lenses..."

"Control was achieved partly through the annihilation of pictorial depth and its replacement by his own marks. Extant unfinished drawings allow us to see that Monsiel began by drawing large figures on his sheet, and then systematically filling the spaces between their defining contours with other figures and faces that became increasingly reduced in scale until the whole sheet was filled."

Outsider Art- Spontaneous Alternatives, Colin Rhodes
