give and take

Last night we were at the vet, picking up our new kittens from their hospital stay. It was just a fever, but they are still very little. The missing and longing was that of new love. They weren't supposed to be able to come home last night, but the vet gave them the okay.

So there we were standing in the waiting area, looking out for the doctor, looking at fat old Labradors drooling and being hugged by sentimental old folks. Then we got a message.

A friend K's age had passed away. He had fallen out of his flat in the morning, an accident. It was his barely year-old wife who had called his friends.

So I say God is good for making my kittens well. But God is also good when someone dies too early, by a way so preventable?

We lay in bed last night just holding on to each other, thinking of all the possibilities. For any of us.

He gives and takes away. Someone gets to live, someone has to die.

Life in its full spectrum is unfolding itself to us sheltered folks, sobering us up.
