Finally I met my match in maths perseverance. This 72-year-old man from an indian village took 36 years to pass his high school maths exam. He'd vowed that he wouldn't get married until he passed it. Now that he's achieved it, his next aim is to look for a wife below 30 years who has an education.

I should watch the news more often.

restless tip-tapping of feet that remember
white sneakers and hidden exchanges
and grey concrete steps that felt so cold
that grew into
red stilettos balancing endless walks
of four feet, then two, then bus seats
and when all gave way,
dancing in flourescent pre-midnight
while trains sped on to take
brokeheart sleepers into rest
and into my completeness
