Kitsch commercial occasions: yes or no?
The school was vibrating with valentine's day yesterday: a year two class effort in typography posters, a professor singing in the lobby, beanbags and tables set up with printed menus, chocolate cocktails and cheese and grapes and cookies and cakes for all, year ones pinning hearts to their chests. As usual it was my friendly group that formed the majority of supportive adm-ers, both to appease astrid and because of the magnetic chocolate spread. It was like the last day of school or something. Homework can just forget about owning us this week.
And then there was our secret little car-packed trip to our professor's house for high tea. We entered to find a sunny table laid with cute teacups, placemats, chubby forks, napkins, donuts, sushi, yakitori, shiny strawberries, hot tea, and brownies. Just looking at all the well laid-out effort made us so happy that our photos turned out cheesy and grinny. If tea parties can make me this happy, I shall invest in more tea parties from now on.
Walking in town last night, one would think that singapore girls are all extremely pretty and well-groomed all the time. Every girl was eye-lined and curly-tressed and pink from reflecting the exorbitant roses in their arms. Even if just for the sake of nationwide good grooming, I'm all for valentine's day.
And I don't think anything could have topped the day better than dancing with the other unlonely hearts. If we'd continued I think I would have hit the roof. But it was back home to wish my mother a happy birthday before she fell asleep.
This kind of happiness is clear, sparkling, pure. I could have avoided valentine's day like I avoid national day (boycotting festivals is only what snobs like me do best) but I'm glad that we plunged into it.
