Why does this image of a painted favela in Brazil, initiated by artists in collaboration with the youth living there, look so appealing, while this in Singapore:

just doesn't have the same fun effect?

"Dutch designers Haas&Hahn (Jeroen Koolhas and Dre Urhahn) are slowly transforming the favelas of Brazil. The pair started working together in 2005, when they filmed a documentary about hip hop in the favelas of Rio and São Paolo for MTV. Inspired by this visit, they embarked on a journey to bring outrageous works of art to unexpected places, starting with painting enormous murals in the slums of Brazil together with the local community.
Over the last month, 34 houses on the giant hillside favela in Praça Cantão has become the latest addition to the project." (itsnicethat.com)

Another wonderful community painting favela project they did:

They painted one of those concrete structures that prevent mudslides, engaging youths and teaching them skills and safety procedures, and giving them paychecks, in a bid to give them an alternative way of life from drug gangs.

Singapore, are you ready for some major tattoos?
