It has begun. The brides are getting younger, and now the children of church members are getting personal invitations to weddings. Looking around at the pews and tables yesterday, I could almost hear marriage coming to conquer the YAG with loud, stomping footsteps.
It's more fun now though. We're important as guests and contributors. Friday saw Sharon and me playing with an endless sea of white organza out in the church yard. We wished amelia was there to take photos of us decorating our very first wedding car (what more, the sun was setting in a very photogenic way). There was a lot of confusion and hubbub as we tried to figure out the mechanical design of the benz, which we found does not include a lever to open the petrol tank, and does not have a symbol for the bonnet lever. And then there were the aisles to decorate, the second car to prettify, and the flowerless wrist corsages to tie.
No matter what I claim not to want for my own wedding, I do enjoy other people's wedding dinners. There's something comforting about knowing what dish is going to come next, even if we all pretend to groan. The soft light of wedding dinners is important to end the wedding day, as is the glass of wine, the napkin on the lap, the small talk with tablemates, the eyeing of one another's suits and gowns, the sudden poise that everyone acquires, and the little walks to the toilet just to get a feel of the hotel.
So that was kuan mei and samuel's wedding, the youngest couple i personally know to get married in modern times. He's 23 and she's 24; I can't imagine those 23-year-old lunatics I know getting married any time soon. The second toast made to them was "to the couple looking older as the years go by!"
More church weddings are coming up. That adds up to 4 more outfits to think about, more corsages to make, and more napkins on laps.
And--Holler is out, and I'm happy. :)
