Do you remember the dancing sky, about eleven months ago? Dawn went twice and took me along the second time. We stood on a hill cramped up against patient people and waited. As dawn put it, it was the only time everybody in a crowd liked each other, because we were all enchanted.

Sometimes in a crowd you can feel like the only person in the world. And that's what happened when these planets descended upon us, gentle and magnificent like kind celestial beings. Much of the performances were too long and repetitive, seemingly stretched out to fill the length of music without truly expressing any climax, wax or wane. But when the planets descended I wished they would stay closer, and longer. That's the draw of Studio Festi, the italians behind the dancing sky: their performance stories, though rather plotless, fall back on pure beauty. And it works to please crowds on weekend nights and make them go home feeling like they've witnessed a piece of magic.

That was night festival last year, and it's back again next week. This time with Pan.Optikum, a German group whose performances veer towards the unpretty and edgy, but which will strike a chord with audiences looking for more bite than beauty.

I can already hear the children going "wahhh". Let's go out next friday night.
